The alternative email address and phone number will be used when you want to change or reset forgotten Microsoft account password or to alert you if Microsoft finds suspicious activity on your account.
It's a good idea to keep the phone number and alternative email address associated with your Microsoft account to up-to-date. Therefore, when you change your phone number or alternative email address, be sure to change the phone number or alternative email address linked to your Microsoft account as well.
In this guide, we will explain how to change the phone number associated with your Microsoft account.
Complete the given below instructions to change or remove your Microsoft account phone number.
Changing phone number associated with your Microsoft account
Step 1: First of all, head over to this page of Microsoft in a web browser. As always, sign in to your Microsoft account.
Step 2: Once you sign-in, you will see the following page with various details about your Microsoft account. Click the Security tab.
Step 3: On this page, you should see options to change your password, update security information, and review recent activity. Click Update Info button.
Step 4: Clicking the Update info button will take you to the following page where you need to verify your identity by either selecting your current contact number or secondary email address.
Choose one of the options, enter last four digits of your phone number currently associated with your Microsoft account or type the secondary email address, and then click SendCode button to receive the verification code to your phone number or secondary email address.
Step 5: Type in the verification code. Click the Submit button to verify your identity.

To change your Microsoft account phone number, click the Remove link next to your contact number. If you don't have a contact number for your account, skip to the next step to add one.
When you see the confirmation dialog, click Remove button to remove the phone number from your account.
Step 7: Now, on the same page, click Add security info link.
Step 8: Select A phone number from the first drop-down box, select your country, enter your phone number which you want to associate with your Microsoft account, and select a method to verify the contact number (text or call).
Click Next button.
Step 9: If you have chosen text method to verify your number, you will receive a code to your phone. Finally, enter the code received on the phone in the field and then click Next button. And if you opted for a call, you will receive a call from Microsoft to verify the contact number. That's it! You have successfully changed or added your phone number to your Microsoft account.
If you want to receive alerts (when Microsoft finds unusual activity on your account), click Change alert options link on the same page, and simply check the box next to your phone number.

-->You can follow these steps to add your two-factor verification and password reset methods. After you've set this up the first time, you can return to the Security info page to add, update, or delete your security information.
If you're prompted to set this up immediately after you sign in to your work or school account, see the detailed steps in the Set up your security info from the sign-in page prompt article.
If what you're seeing on your screen doesn't match what's being covered in this article, it means that your administrator hasn't turned on this experience yet. Until this experience is turned on, you must follow the instructions and information in the Set up my account for two-step verification section.
Note
Security info doesn't support using phone extensions. Even if you add the proper format, +1 4255551234X12345, the extensions are removed before the call is placed.
Microsoft Support Phone Number For XboxIf you don't see a phone option, it's possible that your organization doesn't allow you to use this option for verification. In this case, you'll need to choose another method or contact your organization's help desk for more assistance.
Security verification versus password reset authenticationSecurity info methods are used for both two-factor security verification and for password reset. However, not all methods can be used for both.

To set up phone callsMicrosoft Xbox Phone Number BillingSign in to your work or school account and then go to your https://myaccount.microsoft.com/ page.
Select Security info from the left navigation pane or from the link in the Security info block, and then select Add method from the Security info page.
On the Add a method page, select Phone from the drop-down list, and then select Add.
On the Phone page, type the phone number for your mobile device, choose Call me, and then select Next.
Answer the verification phone call, sent to the phone number you entered, and follow the instructions.
The page changes to show your success.
Your security info is updated and you can use phone calls to verify your identity when using two-step verification or password reset. If you want to make phone calls your default method, see the Change your default security info method section of this article.
Delete phone calls from your security info methodsIf you no longer want to use phone calls as a security info method, you can remove it from the Security info page.

If you delete phone calls by mistake, there's no way to undo it. You'll have to add the method again, following the steps in the Set up phone calls section of this article.
To delete phone callsOn the Security info page, select the Delete link next to the Phone option.
Select Yes from the confirmation box to delete the Phone number. After your phone number is deleted, it's removed from your security info and it disappears from the Security info page. If Phone is your default method, the default will change to another available method.
Change your default security info methodIf you want phone calls to be the default method used when you sign-in to your work or school account using two-factor verification or for password reset requests, you can set it from the Security info page.
To change your default security info methodOn the Security info page, select the Change link next to the Default sign-in method information.
Select Phone - call (your_phone_number) from the drop-down list of available methods, and then select Confirm.

Phone Number XboxAdditional security info methodsYou have additional options for how your organization contacts you to verify your identity, based on what's you're trying to do. The options include:
Authenticator app. Download and use an authenticator app to get either an approval notification or a randomly generated approval code for two-step verification or password reset. For step-by-step instructions about how to set up and use the Microsoft Authenticator app, see Set up security info to use an authenticator app.
Mobile device text. Enter your mobile device number and get a text a code you'll use for two-step verification or password reset. For step-by-step instructions about how to verify your identity with a text message (SMS), see Set up security info to use text messaging (SMS).
Security key. Register your Microsoft-compatible security key and use it along with a PIN for two-step verification or password reset. For step-by-step instructions about how to verify your identity with a security key, see Set up security info to use a security key.
Email address. Enter your work or school email address to get an email for password reset. This option isn't available for two-step verification. For step-by-step instructions about how to set up your email, see Set up security info to use email.
Security questions. Answer some security questions created by your administrator for your organization. This option is only available for password reset and not for two-step verification. For step-by-step instructions about how to set up your security questions, see the Set up security info to use security questions article.
Note
If some of these options are missing, it's most likely because your organization doesn't allow those methods. If this is the case, you'll need to choose an available method or contact your administrator for more help.
